Pillow Talk: A Little Pillow History

Did you know that the first known pillows (dating from around 7000 BC) weren't used for the sole purpose of comfortably supporting the head and neck while sleeping? Nope. We have to remember it was a different time back then - a very different time! The first pillows were made of hard materials, such as stone or wood. Besides supporting the head and neck while sleeping they also served the purpose of elevating the head in order to prevent insects from crawling into the sleeper's eyes, nose and ears.

Charming.

Eventually, pillows became softer and began to resemble - at least somewhat - the modern pillows in common use today. Early soft pillows had a fabric case that was filled with things like straw, reeds, or feathers. These natural fillings, though, often held mold or mildew, and attracted insects and vermin. They had to be emptied and refilled regularly in order to keep them free from unwelcome sleeping partners.

Pillows, fortunately for us, have come a long way.

Save The Pillow For Later

If you find a horse pillow for sale on Etsy that you like but you're not ready to purchase it right away, you can always add it to your shopping cart so it will be easy to find later.

Important: Putting items in your Etsy shopping cart or "Save for later" list does NOT reserve them! It just makes them easier to find if they're still available when you come back.
