Little S Hackamores

A Little S Hackamore is a mechanical hackamore for horses.

The Little S has curved, "S" shaped shanks that provide less leverage than many other styles of mechanical hackamores. It is often a popular choice for riders who don't want to use a bit, but who have found other mechanical hacks to be too strong for their horse.

About Little S Hackamores

The Little S Hackamore is a type of mechanical hackamore. Because of the angled-to-the-back (instead of straight down) "S" shape to its shanks it does not have as much leverage as many other common styles of mechanical hackamores and is therefore considered to be milder than other common styles. The Reinsman company, one of (but not the only) maker of the Little S Hackamore describes it as follows:

......While it does not have a lot of whoa, it works well on horses that have a lot of natural rate. Has a good deal of lift and a lot of flex......It is a good bit for slow work and training.

Many riders find the Little S Hackamore their choice for barrel racing, trail riding, pleasure, ranch use, and more. It is generally considered a good choice for well broke horses when other hackamores or bits have proven to be "too much bit" for them.

The Little S Hackamore comes with either a rope or flat leather noseband. If you prefer the rope noseband but find it is a little rough for your horse's nose, you can wrap the noseband with Vetrap, fleece from a polo wrap, or another material of your choice to soften it.

The image below shows a mechanical hackamore that is not a Little S. Notice that the shanks come straight down, providing for more leverage than the Little S style that has shanks that point backwards, towards the rider. The Little S hackamore does not provide the amount of leverage this hackamore does.
