About Ranch Bronc Riding
In a Working Ranch Cowboys Association (WRCA) ranch rodeo contestants compete in teams representing ranches, not as individuals as in a "regular" rodeo. The ranch bronc riding event is unique in that it is the only event in which only one member of the team competes.
Below is a brief overview of ranch bronc riding. Please keep in mind that this information is not intended to be complete: It is merely a general guideline about ranch bronc riding in a WRCA sanctioned ranch rodeo.
- Ride for 8 seconds. (The WRCA also sanctions ranch bronc riding events for women only. In those cases, women ride for 6 seconds.)
- A standard, working ranch saddle is used for the ride. The horse should be saddled as it ordinarily would be for everyday use. A specialized saddle used for riding bucking horses, such as an "Association" saddle used in the saddle bronc riding event in a "regular" rodeo, is prohibited.
- Saddles should have full or 7/8 double rigging. Centerfire, 5/8, or 3/4 riggings are not allowed. If you're confused about saddle riggings, you can read about them here: What Are Saddle Rigging Positions?
- The bucking horse, or "bronc," wears a type of halter called a "bronc" halter with one rein, called a "hack rein." The rider holds on to the hack rein during the ride.
- The use of a night latch is allowed. You can read more about what a night latch is here.
- No "mark out" rule. (A mark out rule requires the rider to have the rowels of both spurs in front of, and touching, the break of the bronc's shoulders on its first move out of the chute. The rider's feet must still be in this position when the bronc's front feet hit the ground for the first time.) This rule is standard in both saddle bronc riding and bareback bronc riding, but not in ranch bronc riding. You can read more about the mark out rule here.
- The loss of a stirrup is allowed without disqualification.
- Scoring: There are two judges for the ranch bronc riding event, with each judge scoring the bronc from 1–25 points (for a total of 50 points possible for the bronc) and the rider from 1–25 points (for a total of 50 points possible for the rider). Therefore, the total number of points that can usually be awarded is 100.
Remember, the information above is given as a general guideline and is not meant to be complete.
