Rodeo: What It Meant Then, What It Means Now

When the word “rodeo” was first used in America it was a Spanish term that meant, to the best of our American ability to translate it, “to roundup” or “to gather” or sometimes, “to surround.” More specifically, it was used to refer to the rounding up, gathering, or surrounding of cattle. Gradually, over many years, the word came less and less to mean the roundup itself and more and more to mean the informal contests or exhibitions of cowboy skills that often followed.

By its current definition the word "rodeo" refers to a competition between men and/or women competing in events such as bareback bronc riding, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling (also commonly called bull dogging), team roping, tie down roping, bull riding, and barrel racing. The definition of the word can vary though, so depending on where you’re at or who you’re talking to you might have to add or subtract an event or two. For example, in many junior rodeos you will also find events called goat tying and breakaway roping. At a sanctioned women's rodeo you're likely to see bareback bronc riding and bull riding, but you won’t see steer wrestling or saddle bronc riding.
