The first permanent color photograph was taken in 1861. It was a photograph of a tartan ribbon. ("Tartan" means a crisscross or plaid pattern.)

In 1942 the print film Kodacolor was introduced. It is was a true color negative film and had only 6 exposures per roll.

In 1963 Kodak Instamatic cameras were first sold. They featured film that came in an easy-to-use cartridge and became wildly popular with amateur photographers.
