Antique / Vintage Cowboy Or Western Toys For Sale On

There are usually hundreds of cowboy and/or Western
toys for sale on eBay that their sellers describe as "antique" or "vintage."
However, just because a seller describes a toy with these terms doesn't
mean it really is. When buying antique or vintage toys on eBay or anywhere else,
and it's important to you the toy really is antique or vintage, make sure you
know the item well enough to make those decisions for yourself instead of
relying on the seller to use the terms accurately. Fortunately for most of us,
we really don't care if those terms are accurately used or not, we simply like
the toy the way it is!
Antique / Vintage Toy Terms
Animated Toy - An animated toy is a toy that has some kind of
lifelike movement. The movement can be powered in a variety of ways
(spring, rubber band, electricity, etc.).
Antique - Defining the term antique can be difficult. As a general
definition, an antique is an item that is 100 years old or older. It
should not be taken for granted that any seller, on eBay or anywhere
else, describing a toy or other item as an antique can be trusted for
their description to be accurate.
Artificial Antiquing - Refinishing or otherwise changing the
appearance of a toy to make it appear to be older than it is.
Balance Wheel - When used to describe a toy that has a horse-drawn
vehicle, a balance wheel is a small wheel that helps the horse and
vehicle move across the floor. Balance wheels are commonly attached to
the hoof of a horse or on a shaft between horses.
Bisque -
Unglazed porcelain or clay that has been fired only once to make it water
resistant and easier to handle.
Clockwork Mechanism - A way to animate toys by using interlocking gears and
springs. Frequently, these are "wind-up" toys. A toy that has some type
of clockwork mechanism does not mean it is an old toy, although it can
be.
Vintage - According to the dictionary "vintage" is supposed to mean
"Characterized by excellence, maturity, and enduring appeal; classic." The term
"vintage," for some, implies that an item is valued as a collectible item but
this is not necessarily the case.
